The Utility of Ultrasonography in Evaluating the Pediatric Orbit
Orbital ultrasonography is increasingly used in children due to its dynamic capability, portable nature, widespread availability, and lack of ionizing radiation. Ultrasonography provides excellent visualization of orbital structures and demonstrates characteristic imaging findings for
a variety of orbital pathologies. Herein, we presented the technique for performing orbital sonography and described the ultrasonographic appearance of normal orbital structures. In addition, we discussed common pediatric orbital pathologies; provided background information regarding epidemiology,
clinical presentation, and histologic characteristics; and demonstrated the sonographic findings for each entity.
Learning Objective: Review basic ocular anatomy, familiarize radiologists with orbital sonography technique, and present imaging characteristics of common pediatric orbital lesions as visualized on sonography.
